GUDEJob sounds like “Good job!” but we use the acronym G.U.D.E. to outline the 4 key areas that define a successful career development life: Gratitude, Understanding, Determination, and Enthusiasm. We share experiences, applications, and resources to help you gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment in this lifelong process that we call career development. Everything you do is a job, so do a GUDEJob.

How do you define success? Well if you ask 100 people this question you could get 100 different answers because everyone has their own definition of what success means. For someone it may be finding true love, for another it may be running a profitable business, and for another still it could be retiring with their own teeth. Even though there may not be a universal definition of success, there is, however, the agreement across many lines that all of us are trying to develop a career and right now we are at Point A. When you are at Point A and you want to get to Point B–and then you finally get there–you have achieved success.

Most people think of career development when it comes to doing a particular job, but at GUDEJob.com we believe that everything you do is a job, whether it’s about your home, work, or school; or you are dealing with yourself, a relationship, or a team; or if you are in a state of stability, transition, or limbo—everything you do is a job, meaning that you are trying to get from Point A to Point B.

For most people getting to Point B is all they care about. To them once you accomplish what you set out to do then everything else will take care of itself. But what we have learned over decades of living, learning, studying, and achieving success on our own and witnessing the success of others is that there are two parts to success:

1) Achieving your Point B; and,

2) The journey to your Point B–which is something we call the process.

We have consistently found over the years that the people who have experienced the highest level of success in the career development process display these 4 key areas from our GUDEJob acronym G.U.D.E.: Gratitude, Understanding, Determination, and Enthusiasm.

Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the key areas of successful career development because it helps you to hurdle over the roadblocks that the process towards success throws your way. With an attitude of gratitude, you are first of all grateful and thankful that you get the opportunity to participate in this thing called life. Each day over 150,000 people no longer get the chance at life so no matter what situation you are in as long as you have breath you have hope. Gratitude also attracts the energy you need from yourself and from others to achieve success and sustain it.

Understanding

The second key to successful career development is understanding. Knowledge is knowing something, but understanding is knowing how to use it. You gain a greater sense of the process you are in when you understand how any job fits into the big scheme of things. With understanding you can gain a small world perspective that 1) keeps you thirsty for knowledge, and 2) reminds you that we are all in this world together. It’s not what you know, or who you know; it’s why you know.

Determination

Determination is the third key to successful career development because without it you will become distracted, discouraged, or derailed so that you never reach your Point B. Determination is simply acknowledging where you are today and then taking the next step in the direction towards your Point B. At GUDEJob we call it, “Assess-N-Step,” where you take an honest assessment of where you are today and then taking the next step to move you towards your Point B. The more you can assess-n-step the more positive fuel it can add to your determination.

Enthusiasm

The fourth key to successful career development is enthusiasm because it is the glue that makes the journey to Point B all worth it. Enthusiasm flows naturally from passion, so that most people who follow their passion develop an enthusiasm for the job they do along the way of achieving Point B. It is a measuring stick of the level of satisfaction you have for the job you are trying to do. There is little or no fun trying to do a job if there is no enthusiasm.
